The Sabbath Day

True Jesus Church believes that the Sabbath, the seventh day of the week (Saturday), is a holy day blessed by God, kept under grace to remember His creation and salvation and to look forward to eternal rest.

The article of faith
The Sabbath day, the seventh day of the week (Saturday), is a holy day, blessed and sanctified by God. It is to be observed under the Lord’s grace for the commemoration of God’s creation and salvation, and with the hope of eternal rest in the life to come.

信安息日(星期六)为神赐福之日。但要在恩典下纪念其创造及救赎之恩,并盼望来世永远安息而遵守之。

God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. “God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it” (Genesis 2:3). Later He wrote into the Ten Commandments, “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8). On today’s calendar, the seventh day of the week is Saturday.

Jesus kept the Sabbath. Luke says He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath “as his custom was” (Luke 4:16). After His resurrection, the apostles still gathered on the Sabbath (Acts 17:2). The Bible never moves the day of rest to Sunday. Sunday worship became the norm later, after the Roman emperor Constantine ordered Sunday as a day of rest in AD 321. Since God has not changed His commandment, we keep the seventh day.

Keeping the Sabbath under grace does not mean living under a heavy list of rules. Jesus said, “The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath” (Mark 2:27), and He did good on the Sabbath, healing the sick. We keep the day to remember that God made us, that He has saved us from sin through Jesus, and that a greater rest is waiting in the life to come. We set aside our own work and business so we can rest, worship God and do good.

At BMC, our main weekly worship is on Saturday. The Sabbath runs from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. On that day members gather for worship, sermons, prayer and hymn singing, and children attend religious education classes. You are welcome to join us on any Saturday.

Common questions

Why don’t you worship on Sunday like most churches?

Because the Bible names the seventh day, Saturday, as the Sabbath, and nowhere tells Christians to change it. Jesus and the apostles kept the seventh day. Sunday worship came from later church tradition, not from Scripture.

Isn’t keeping the Sabbath going back under the law?

No. We keep the Sabbath under grace, not to earn salvation. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath, and He showed that the day is for rest, worship and doing good (Matthew 12:12). It is a gift from God, not a burden.

When does the Sabbath begin and end?

It runs from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday, wherever you live. During that time members rest from their ordinary work and keep the day for God, gathering for worship and spending time in prayer, Bible reading and caring for others.
