Holy Communion
True Jesus Church believes that Holy Communion, using one unleavened bread and grape juice, is the sacrament in which baptised believers remember the Lord’s death and partake of His flesh and blood, so that they may have eternal life and be raised on the last day.
The Holy Communion is the sacrament to commemorate the death of the Lord Jesus Christ. It enables us to partake of the flesh and blood of our Lord and to be in communion with Him so that we can have eternal life and be raised on the last day. This sacrament shall be held as often as possible. Only one unleavened bread and grape juice shall be used.
信圣餐为纪念主死,同领主肉、主血,与主联合,能得永生,在末日复活之典礼。要时常举行,但必须用一个无酵饼及葡萄汁举办之。
On the night He was betrayed, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). Then He took the cup and called it His blood of the new covenant. Holy Communion is how the church keeps this command until He comes again (1 Corinthians 11:26).
True Jesus Church believes Communion is more than a memorial meal. After the bread and grape juice are blessed in the name of the Lord Jesus, we truly partake of His flesh and blood in a spiritual way. Jesus said, “Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day” (John 6:54). Through Communion we are united with Christ, and with one another.
We follow the way the Lord did it. The bread is unleavened, made only of flour and water, because Jesus set up Communion at the Passover, when no leaven was used, and in the Bible leaven often stands for sin. The cup is unfermented grape juice. Only one loaf is used however many people are present, because “we being many are one bread, and one body” (1 Corinthians 10:17). After the prayer of thanks it is broken into pieces and shared, and the grape juice is poured into small cups.
Only baptised members take part, because Communion is the fellowship of those whose sins have been washed away and who belong to Christ, just as only those within God’s covenant could eat the Passover. Before partaking, members pray quietly, examine themselves and ask God’s forgiveness (1 Corinthians 11:28). Visitors are welcome to be present at the service.
Common questions
Can non-members take Holy Communion?
No. Only those who have been baptised according to the Bible take part. In the Old Testament, only those within God’s covenant could eat the Passover (Exodus 12:43-48), which pointed forward to Communion. Communion is also the fellowship of the church as one body. You are still very welcome to attend the service.
Why grape juice and not wine?
Because Jesus set up Communion during the Passover, the feast of unleavened bread, when leaven was removed from the home. So we use unleavened bread and unfermented grape juice. Jesus Himself called the cup “this fruit of the vine” (Matthew 26:29).
Is the bread really the body of Christ, or only a symbol?
Jesus said, “this is my body”, not “this represents my body” (Matthew 26:26). The bread and juice do not change in substance, but after they are blessed, believers truly partake of the Lord’s flesh and blood in a spiritual way. That is why Communion is received with reverence.
